Opened in 1892, Manchester Crematorium was the second to open in England. Virtually all official records of persons cremated were lost in the 'Christmas Blitz' of 1940. This CD contains transcripts of 5979 memorials, recording 8555 cremations, 5669 dating from before 1941. A comprehensive name index records the 9107 names which appear on the memorials. This is the only source for information about cremations 1892-1940, a period when cremation grew from a rare practice to the choice for a significant percentage of funerals. A free index to the names contained on this CDROM can be accessed on the MLFHS web site www.mlfhs.org.uk (Online Data section).
