The Englishman of the Peseta by Mike Shapton

 This is a book about the Englishman who converted his home into the first hotel on the Costa del Sol in 1927. He did this of necessity because he had given away his fortune to the local poor people, a peseta at a time. The peseta was the currency of Spain before the euro. George’s wealth first came from the family cotton business in Manchester but he chose a life of adventure in the cavalry before injury cut that short. His story takes us through the highs of the British Empire and the lows of wars on foreign soil, revealing fascinating details from history as we follow his exploits.

It has received a number of good reviews and is well worth the read.
