Anna Hallett. A5, 64pp. There are around 2500 groups of almshouses in Great Britain, most of which were founded centuries ago. Some of them can trace their origins to the early Middle Ages when religious institutions were among the first to offer shelter to needy people. Many others were initiated by individuals who left money for the erection of sometimes splendid buildings. A number of almshouses can be visited and some have museums attached to them. The book is fully illustrated with many photographs, mainly in colour, of a variety of architectural styles, including coats of arms, inscriptions, statues, clock towers, etc. There is a list of places to visit in England, Scotland and Wales.
