The market town of Todmorden stands some nine miles north-east of Rochdale, Lancashire and twelve miles or so west of Halifax in West Yorkshire. Once, when cotton was king, it was a thriving community where dozens of spinning and weaving mills provided work for most of its then thriving thirty thousand population. This book does not pretend to be a history of Todmorden, but a brief guide to its early education and its founding of its schools; especially in the district of Shade. Well illustrated with over 90 photographs including schools, houses, churches.
