Cherry Valley Chronicles
Code:Cherry Valley Chronicles transcribed by Maurice Dennett, BA. A4, 176pp. In the summer of 1987, the Saddleworth Museum held an exhibition to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Queen Victoria's Accession, when an appeal was made to the public for loans of Victoriana. One item which came in was lent by Mrs Jean Roebuck of Marsden; this was a book of letters sent by one of her ancestors, Thomas Buckley, (1794-1875), and his family, from Cherry Valley, Massachusetts, to his son, Ralph, in Dobcross, between 1845 and 1875. Many of the letters are written on thin paper, sometimes in a rather crabbed hand, the ink having faded in places with the passage of time. The transcriptons carried out on these letters give us the family saga of births, marriages, deaths and daily living, played out against a background of joy, sorrow, congratulations, and reproach, and with the accompaniment of national events such as the Civil War, in which five of the family served in the Northern Army
