Stockport - A Pictorial History
Code:Stockport – A Pictorial History Roy Westall A5, 128pp.
This book was first published in 1988, this new edition was published in 2009.
In recent decades Stockport’s image as a dirty mill town has been progressively transformed by redevelopment, which still continues. Sadly, this has resulted in the loss of much of the town’s heritage but in this book, with the aid of old photographs, and maps dating back to the seventeenth century, the reader is taken on a tour of the old town. Carefully captioned visual images create a vivid impression, not only of the streets and the buildings but also of the way of life of Stockport people in the past. Well illustrated with over 180 images that include: maps, churches, streets, pubs, buildings, mills, groups of people eg. pupils & teachers in schools, etc. Some of the places mentioned include: The Market Place (eg. Staircase Café, Stockport Castle), St Petersgate, Chestergate (eg. Stockport Grammar School, Underbank Hall), The Mersey, Wellington Road (eg. Stockport Infirmary), Hillgate (eg. Bowler Hat Manufactory), etc.
