Growing up in Bolton, Rosalind Horrocks 70pp, A4. The writer’s reminiscences of Bolton from the 1940s to 1970s. Great Lever is the starting point of her travels through Bolton and covers the many changes that have taken place over the years she lived there. Much of the industry has disappeared, remembering the cotton industry in Bolton, John Smiths Bleach Works, shops on Victoria Square, Newport Street, Bradshawgate, Trinity Street, places to play, train spotting, visits to theatre & treats, clubs, pubs and coffee bars & music, etc. Includes Schooldays – St.Simon and St.Jude on Rishton Lane, St.Michael’s Primary School on Manchester Road, Bolton School and Canon Slade School and Hayward Grammar School. At 15 she started work on Sumner’s fancy goods stall in the Market Hall, became a nurse at Pendlebury Children’s Hospital and later got a job at a mail order firm. The book is well illustrated with over 90 photographs of streets, buildings, school photos, rose queens, groups of people, her wedding photographs, etc.
